Our planet is in flux, for better or for worse...

Some changes — like the Great Man-Made River in Libya — are deliberate and positive. Other changes — like the effects of the drought on California — have been seen as a sign of the end of days. NASA has been there through all the fluctuations of our globe, documenting then and now. This stunning photo series released on NASA's website gives us a glimpse of exactly how our planet is changing. 

2. Aral Sea, Central Asia in August, 2000 and August, 2014

These photos document how the Aral Sea is shrinking. At one time, it was the world's fourth largest saltine lake. However, after the rivers that feed the Aral Sea were diverted to irrigate the desert area around the sea, the Aral Sea began to shrink. 

3. Carroll Glacier, Alaska in August, 1906 and September, 2003

It's almost a case of "now you see it, now you don't." These photos, taken a hundred years apart, show us how much the Carroll Glacier in Alaska has shrunk. Despite a brief increase in size in the 1980s, the glacier has been shrinking for most of the 20th century.
