Amidst this summer’s unrelenting (global warming-induced) heat wave, a terrifying climate article is making tsunami waves in the climate community and beyond...
Battle lines have been drawn as to whether it is helpful or paralyzing to frighten people about our climate emergency.
David Wallace Well’s “The Uninhabitable Earth” (annotated version here) is New York Magazine’s most widely read article ever with more than two million hits! This reveals that many people are open to the unvarnished truth about global warming, without green-glossing. We applaud the story, which paints a scenario of the coming devastation without aggressive fossil fuel reductions.* As Joe Romm notes, “We are not doomed…Right now we are choosing to be doomed.”
Read our new blog, “Curiouser and Curiouser,” which asks why the global warming crisis is unseen and trivialized – and suggests five reasons, emphasizing that the public needs to know “What to do, by When, and Why.”
Global warming is alarming. Fear can play a useful, necessary role in this crisis. Americans need an honest national conversation about the climate emergency, so that we can collectively choose the difficult task of immediately slashing carbon fuels to save a livable future.
Like the NY Mag article, the new book “Climageddon: The Global Warming Emergency & How To Survive It” doesn’t hold back about what we face (and how we need to respond) – check it out, if you haven’t already.
Thank you for all that you do,
Association for the Tree of Life
*Based on extensive conversations with climate scientists, and on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s median-to-most-dire warming projections.
Association for the Tree of Life is one of the lead organizations creating the national conversation on the climate emergency that can lead to a declaration of Global Warming State of Emergency. ATL is activating Americans to call for national climate policies and emergency mobilization to phase out fossil fuels within a decade. ATL is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)3 organization.
