Job One for Humanity's, History, Independence, and Track Record

Job One for Humanity was founded in 2008 to help people understand climate change honestly and act on that understanding. Over time, the work expanded from climate education and mitigation into risk assessment, preparation, adaptation, resilience, migration, recovery, systems analysis, and climate justice.

This page preserves the organizational history and background that matters, while the main About Job One page stays focused on what visitors can use today.

Beginnings and Mission Evolution

Job One for Humanity began in 2008 as a climate-change public-education project within the larger FACTNet nonprofit ecosystem.

The original work focused heavily on climate mitigation, fossil-fuel reduction, public education, and warnings about severe climate consequences.

As climate impacts intensified and decades passed without adequate global emissions reductions, Job One expanded its practical mission. Preparation, adaptation, resilience, recovery, migration, and managed retreat became increasingly important.

That change did not mean abandoning mitigation. It reflected a broader risk-management approach:

Keep reducing future danger while preparing for consequences that can no longer be completely avoided.

Job One's present work therefore combines climate analysis with practical preparation and resilience.

Independence and Public Funding

Job One describes itself as a publicly funded, nonprofit climate-change think tank and risk-assessment organization independent of government, political-party, corporate, and fossil-fuel-industry control.

That independence is important to its editorial identity. Job One has deliberately chosen to publish climate-risk conclusions even when they are more severe than mainstream public summaries.

Independence, however, does not make an analysis automatically correct. Job One's position is that conclusions should be judged by evidence, assumptions, methods, transparency, and how well they survive criticism.

That is why the organization publishes research standards and invites evidence-based challenges to its work.

An All-Volunteer Model

Job One has operated largely through volunteer researchers, analysts, administrators, writers, technical contributors, donors, and supporters.

The organization has historically worked with modest resources compared with major governmental, university, corporate, or foundation-funded climate institutions.

That creates obvious limits. It also shapes the organization's culture: use available resources carefully, make educational material accessible, preserve independence, and focus effort on climate information that can change real decisions.

How the Research Approach Evolved

Job One does not operate an original laboratory or field-climate-science program. Its contribution has been synthesis, interpretation, systems-level risk assessment, forecasting, and public education.

Over time, the organization placed increasing emphasis on:

  • feedback loops and nonlinear climate processes;
  • tipping interactions;
  • underestimation and uncertainty;
  • interactions between climate change and other global stresses;
  • consequence timeframes relevant to household and organizational decisions;
  • preparation, adaptation, resilience, and migration; and
  • systems-thinking methods, including analytical tools developed with Universe Institute.

The present four-website structure makes this division clearer. Job One applies climate analysis to practical risk and action. Universe Institute is the primary research and educational home for the wider polycrisis, DMAP, systems thinking, rational analysis, and complex problem-solving.

Climate Justice, Accountability, and Recovery

Job One has long argued that climate risk is also a justice problem because climate damages are unevenly distributed and people with the fewest resources are often least able to prepare, relocate, recover, or influence policy.

The organization has therefore developed educational material on climate accountability, restitution, recovery, and climate-damage litigation.

These materials should be understood as public education, not a substitute for individualized legal advice.

Digital Security and Organizational Persistence

Job One reports that its websites and projects have experienced repeated hacking, spamming, and denial-of-service attacks over the years. The organization has responded with stronger security practices and more cautious system administration.

This history is relevant because it helped shape Job One's emphasis on redundancy, information preservation, independence, and organizational continuity.

It is not the main reason to trust Job One. Trust should rest on evidence, methods, transparency, and willingness to correct mistakes.

Job One and FACTNet

Job One for Humanity is part of FACTNet's larger nonprofit public-education ecosystem.

FACTNet now serves as the organizational, administrative, coordination, marketing, and shared-vision hub for four specialized educational websites:

  • Job One for Humanity: climate risk, preparation, adaptation, resilience, migration, recovery, and climate action.
  • Universe Institute: polycrisis research, systems thinking, DMAP, rational analysis, metacognition, and complex problem-solving.
  • Way of the Universe: practical philosophy, Right Action, Right Attitudes, cooperation, responsibility, Planetary Citizenship, Universe Citizenship, and constructive renewal.
  • Universe Spirit: meaning, consciousness, spiritual exploration, personal practice, awe, wonder, and inner resilience.

The four sites are designed to complement one another rather than duplicate the same material.

Track Record and Accomplishments

Job One has maintained a large climate-education website, produced extensive climate-risk and preparation material, supported ClimateSafe Village and community-resilience concepts, developed climate justice resources, and published forecasts and analysis intended for public use.

Because historical traffic totals, project counts, budgets, and other metrics change over time, this page does not freeze old numbers into permanent copy. Current accomplishments and transparency information should be maintained on dedicated pages where they can be updated without rewriting the main About page.

Why the Main About Page Is Now Shorter

Older versions of Job One's About and Mission pages accumulated research arguments, warnings, history, security issues, climate forecasts, volunteer information, justice programs, institutional background, and hundreds of links.

Much of that material remains valuable. It simply does not all belong in the first explanation a new visitor sees.

The current information architecture follows a simpler rule:

One page should do one primary job well.

The main About page explains what Job One is and what a visitor can do. This page preserves the institutional background. Specialist pages hold specialist material.

Frequently Asked Questions

When was Job One for Humanity founded?

Job One was founded in 2008 as part of the broader FACTNet nonprofit public-education ecosystem.

Is Job One politically affiliated?

Job One describes itself as nonpartisan and independent of political parties, governments, corporations, and fossil-fuel-industry control.

Is Job One a university or laboratory?

No. It is a climate think tank, risk-assessment, and public-education organization. It synthesizes and analyzes published research rather than operating an original laboratory or field-science program.

Why did Job One shift toward adaptation and resilience?

Because decades of delayed mitigation increased the importance of preparing for climate consequences already occurring or no longer fully avoidable. Job One continues to support mitigation while adding preparation, adaptation, resilience, recovery, and migration planning.

Why is some older Job One language more severe than the current About page?

The website contains material written across many years, under different scientific and organizational contexts. Current pages are being reviewed to distinguish established science, emerging evidence, Job One analysis, scenarios, hypotheses, and precautionary forecasts more clearly.

How does Universe Institute relate to Job One?

Job One specializes in climate risk and practical response. Universe Institute is the primary home for wider polycrisis analysis, DMAP, systems thinking, rationality, and advanced complex-problem analysis.

Where is the Evolutioneer identity defined?

FACTNet is the canonical home of the broader Evolutioneer identity. Job One applies that identity specifically to climate reality, preparation, protection, resilience, and climate action.
