The Critical Climate Change Meta-Pattern Most People Are Still Missing. It May Stun or Surprise You!

Our climate think tank has warned for years that extreme weather consequences from climate change will expand dramatically from about 2026 through 2031–2035, and then move toward far faster increases in severity, frequency, and scale from about 2035 to 2050. It's no longer going to be a steady, slow climb in consequences, as in the past. But what does this new meta-pattern mean?

Are you already seeing a worldwide pattern of dramatically increasing extreme weather, yet not fully recognizing this pattern for what it really is? 

Even many well-educated climate change individuals do not realize that many of today’s record-breaking local, regional, national, and international "bad or extreme" weather events are not isolated once-every-hundred-years or once-every-thousand-years rare events or oddities. They are the glaring early warning signs of a new global climate meta-pattern that is moving climate change consequences from the slow growth of the past to considerably faster growth in severity, frequency, and scale.

At first, these extreme weather events occurred in smaller areas, at lower intensities, and with lower frequency. They certainly looked random and rare. One month, there is catastrophic record-breaking flooding in one region. Another month, record-breaking heat. Then drought, wildfire, crop damage, or a large surge in ocean temperatures appears elsewhere. These events all seemed far removed from each other and from historical weather patterns. 

Unfortunately, the media and our governments keep describing these extreme weather events as rare, record-breaking, stand-alone disasters. That official framing is dangerously incomplete and unhelpful to a public that needs to be honestly informed about the intensifying consequences of climate change that could affect their finances, health, or even survival.

Most people don't realize that for every 1°C increase in global atmospheric temperature, the atmosphere can hold about 7% more water vapor. That added water vapor eventually falls somewhere as rain, snow, or other precipitation. This is one major reason why the world is now seeing more extreme rainfall events, including places receiving 10, 20, or even 30 inches of rain over just one to three days, in areas where such events were all but unknown. These new rain bombs will not only become more frequent over the next several decades but also grow larger and even more severe as temperatures rise and even more water vapor enters the atmosphere.

Another example is the increasing number of heat domes and long-duration heat waves. More areas are now experiencing temperatures of 100°F, 110°F, or even 120°F for days or weeks. It is not just high temperatures that are dangerous to human health, especially in the oldest and youngest in the population. Even greater heat-related danger is posed by wet-bulb heat. 

Wet-bulb temperature is a measure of heat and humidity that determines how effectively the human body can cool itself through sweating and evaporation. Unlike standard air temperature, it reflects how heat actually feels to the body. When the air is highly humid, sweat cannot evaporate, making the environment dangerous even at lower temperatures. Wet bulb temperature matters because it determines survival limits. 
High humidity slows or stops this evaporation process. If the air is fully saturated with water vapor (100% humidity), wet-bulb and ambient temperatures are equal, and sweating provides no cooling effect. And here's the real danger: scientists consider a wet-bulb temperature of 35°C (95°F) to be the upper limit of human survivability. At this threshold, even a healthy, resting person in the shade with access to water can no longer cool down, which can quickly lead to fatal heatstroke if exposure is prolonged.
Here's the really bad wet bulb reality. As more water vapor enters the atmosphere with rising temperatures, humidity will increase worldwide in more places than ever before, leading to even higher wet-bulb temperatures. Start paying closer attention to wet bulb temperatures if you live in an area where high humidity accompanies your local high temperatures.
Unfortunately, both higher-temperature and higher wet-bulb heat events are occurring in more regions, more frequently, and covering larger areas where such extremes were once rare, placing major new stresses on human health, electrical grids, agriculture, water supplies, and infrastructure. Humanity now needs to actively prepare for far more heat domes and record-breaking wet-bulb temperatures. In the decades to come, it will not be unheard of for individuals working outdoors during high-temperature, wet-bulb events to need to wear environmental suits to stay cool and alive.
A third important example is the increase in severe wildfires and droughts. Wildfires are burning hotter, spreading faster, lasting longer, and damaging larger areas. Droughts are becoming more intense in many regions, reducing water supplies, harming food production, and increasing the risk of future fire disasters. There are many more examples involving storms, floods, sea-level rise, ocean heat waves, crop failures, ecosystem damage, and infrastructure breakdown.

Right now, many areas around the world, including the US, Europe, and Asia, are experiencing all three of the above extreme weather events as well as other related climate change consequences.

 

What most people still do not understand about the rising extreme weather events is this:

  1. Today’s record-breaking extreme weather and climate disasters are not just rare “bad or extreme weather.” They are the early, visible edge of a much larger climate shift and a new climate-change meta-pattern. 
  2.  Health risks rise dramatically faster during extreme weather events. These extreme weather health risks are far higher than in the past, when we were only experiencing gradually increasing climate change consequences.

These "bad or extreme" weather events are also becoming more severe, more frequent, and more widespread as climate change destabilizes major Earth systems and the increasing heat of climate change generally intensifies most climate change primary and secondary consequences. These normal weather destabilizing factors include disrupted and unstable jet streams, reduced Arctic summer sea ice, slowing ocean circulation, reduced albedo (sunlight reflection) from melting snow and ice, rising ocean temperatures, drying soils, more turbulent winds, and more heat trapped in the atmosphere and oceans.

These extreme weather events, increasing in severity, frequency, and scale, are not random! They are not outside the warnings scientists have been giving for almost 6 decades. They are the screaming early warning signs of the next rapid increase, and that a meta-pattern in climate change disruption has already begun.

When you hear news reports about extreme heat in Europe, wildfires in the United States, Canada, or Russia, droughts in southern Europe, Africa, Indonesia, or the western United States, or rainbomb flooding disasters in places that have never seen such rainfall before, stop thinking about these events as isolated abnormalities. They are not. Think of them as previews of your future the world's future.

These smaller, less intense, and less frequent extreme weather events we see today will continue to grow larger, more intense, more frequent, more widespread, and unchecked until humanity makes the required, immediate, and radical global cuts to global fossil fuel use necessary to slow this meta pattern of increasing climate change consequences.

This does not mean every extreme weather event is caused only by climate change. Local weather has many causes. But climate change is now loading the dice and has you sitting at a gambling table with a crooked owner. It is increasing the odds, intensity, duration, scale, and potential for damage of many kinds of extreme weather. That is the escalating pattern people must learn to recognize and demand that their politicians fix.

The next time you watch the news and hear about another “record-breaking” once-in-a-100-year or 1,000-year climate disaster, do not be fooled by the casual way it is being presented. You are not merely watching one unlucky town, one unlucky country, or one unlucky season. You are watching the next stages of the world's future.

 

Unfortunately, extreme weather preparation, adaptation, resilience building, or migration alone is not enough.

We must also radically reduce global fossil fuel use, because every additional year of delay makes the future more dangerous, more expensive, and more painful.

A developing El Niño is also expected to intensify global heat and many extreme weather risks during 2026 and into the 2026–2027 winter season. Some of those effects may lessen after the El Niño phase passes, but the broader meta-pattern of more extreme weather and intensifying climate change impacts will not disappear. Unless fossil fuel use falls rapidly, the climate change meta-pattern will continue toward climate change consequences of greater severity, frequency, and scale.

The hard climate change acceleration truth is this:

We can no longer prevent all climate-related financial loss and human suffering. That opportunity was wasted by six decades of denial, delay, weak, and impotent action.

But we can still prevent far more loss and suffering than most people realize.

We are not out of time to reduce future damage. We are out of time for ineffective half-measures.

Every fraction of a degree of avoided warming still matters. Every year sooner that humanity radically cuts global fossil fuel use means fewer homes destroyed, fewer farms failing, fewer people displaced and migrating, fewer lives lost, fewer governments destabilized, and fewer economies broken by climate-related disasters.

This worsening pattern is not a commandment carved in stone. It is a warning. And warnings exist so intelligent people can still change direction.

The real choice is no longer between the comfortable old normal and an uncomfortable transition away from fossil fuels. The old normal is disappearing quickly before your eyes.

The real choice is between a managed emergency transition away from fossil fuels or an unmanaged climate, economic, and social collapse forced upon us by the unyielding laws of physics.

The faster we cut fossil fuel use globally, the more lives, communities, ecosystems, and resources we can still save.

Because global fossil fuel use has not been reduced sufficiently over the last 60 years, additional climate change disruption and some nasty climate change consequences are now unavoidable. We must prepare for that honestly. We must adapt our homes, farms, cities, economies, and emergency systems for more extreme climate conditions.
