September 2020 has given us a glimpse of the future for the American West, and it is a bleak hell of catastrophic heat, drought and fire.

Great news: We can replace all today’s fossil fuel energy with zero-combustion renewable energy in 5 years. But the bad news is, our governments are sabotaging that transformation.

Planet Earth is going down due to continued and increasing global environmental destruction, degradation, and pollution. By the 1970s, both the environmental movement and governments had begun to see what was happening, which resulted in the first US Earth Day in 1970, and the UN Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment in 1972.

The greatest threat ever to human survival — yes, our species — will not feature highly in this year’s US presidential election contest. The climate and planet Earth did not feature big in the big US national convention speeches. The Republican speeches failed to recognize climate change at all and the Democrat ones all but failed to recognize the climate emergency.

The Republican Party platform

On 22 August 2020, the Republican Party passed a firm resolution to stick with the party’s 2016 platform without any change, saying it “will continue to enthusiastically support the President’s America-first agenda” (or, more accurately, his “America-second agenda” as his first agenda always seems to be Donald Trump).

This will continue the Trump / GOP-driven descent towards American fascism.

On climate change, it will continue to “unleash $50 trillion in untapped shale oil, and natural gas reserves, plus hundreds of years in clean [sic] coal reserves.”

Global warming is accelerating. The following survival-critical deadlines should be kept in mind. 

What has been known as the climate cliff is the climate point you go over which begins the runaway global warming process. 

The nine facts in this article are the facts that most other environmental groups are afraid to tell you. Once you understand them, you will be better prepared for what is happening now and what is coming.

From my perspective, the biggest news about climate change is that it is no longer news.

Elder climate activist, the BBC’s Sir David Attenborough, and the youthful climate activist, Greta Thunberg, are among those who have voiced concern that while the Covid-19 pandemic is a present-time global crisis, climate disruption is a dire global emergency for all today’s children and all future generations (not to mention the millions of people whose lives have already been impacted by climate disasters at least in part attributable to climate disruption).

Several writers have found similarities between Covid and the climate, and some have called on the world to launch a Covid-style response — immediate, united, aggressive — to avoid total planetary climate catastrophe.
